Overview

The Rock Creek Road Bridge over Rock Creek (Bridge No. 17c0057) carries two-way traffic on the existing one-lane bridge.  The existing narrow bridge is load restricted and lies in a populated and heavily forested area between Nevada City and the South Yuba River Canyon.

This steel and timber bridge has a curb-to-curb roadway width of 13.9 feet.  The approach roadways are unimproved gravel.  The County applied for Highway Bridge Program (HBP) funding to remove and replace the bridge.  The HBP funds necessary to begin the replacement process will be made available to the County in December 2025.  The replacement bridge will be two lanes to improve circulation and safety at the creek crossing.

Bridge History

The existing bridge was constructed in 1920 and has been load restricted since 1989.  The single span bridge includes steel girders and a timber deck supported on concrete abutments.  The timber deck treads and timber railing require ongoing periodic maintenance by the County Public Works staff.  The girders are a mix of railroad car beams and steel wide flange beams.  The bridge has tall vertical faced abutments directly adjacent to the ordinary water line in the creek. This bridge is listed in Caltrans Bridge Inventory as not eligible for National Historic Places designation.
